The 2008 Fresno Grizzlies


The Grizzlies finished the 2007 season 10 games over .500 with a 77-67 record which was good enough to claim second place in the Pacific Coast League South Division behind Sacramento (84-60). The season was a huge success over the 2006 season where the Grizzlies in last place at 30 games back posting a record of 61-83.

The Grizzlies also turned heads around the PCL with the numerous awards they received along with leading a variety of categories. Grizzlies pitchers posted a team 4.00 ERA which was second in the league and allowed the second fewest home runs at 122 (lowest was Nashville at 118). They recorded 1,020 strikeouts on the season which gave them 4th place along with having the PCL strikeout leader (141), Matt Kinney, on their staff. Kinney finished 14 strikeouts ahead of Memphis Mike Smith who had 127).

The Grizzlies offense exploded this year as they held a batting average of .286 (18 points higher than 2006) and were third in the league in stolen bases (138) and triples (39). They were fourth in the league in hits with 1442 (an improvement of 120 extra hits from 2006).

A few key highlights of Grizzlies players at the top of the PCL include Nate Schierholtz batting .337 (fifth place), Matt Kinney and Chris Begg tied for 12 wins, Travis Blackley pitching 162.1 innings (sixth place) and Scott McClain in fifth place with 31 home runs.

The Grizzlies had seven combined Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week Awards the Grizzlies won from the Pacific Coast League. Winners: Tim Lincecum (twice), Matt Kinney, Chris Begg, Scott McClain, Nate Schierholtz and Sun Woo Kim. (An improvement over 2006 where the Grizzlies only had one representative for the season.)
